Welcome to SIANI

Agriculture covers 40% of the earth's total ice-free land area, accounts for 70% of global fresh water use, emits more greenhouse gases than any other human activity, employs 3/4 of the world's poorest people and feeds all of us. It is the key foundation of human civilisation and it is also where most of our present day development problems such as poverty, hunger, environmental degradation and climate change converge.

Feeding a global population of 9 billion people by 2040 in a sustainable manner is one of the greatest challenges that mankind has ever faced. The Swedish International Agriculture Network Initiative (SIANI) was born out of the conviction that in order to succeed, all actors and stakeholders must be engaged in dialogue and coherent action.

We are a Swedish response to the 21st century's food and farming crisis. We are an inter-disciplinary and multi-stakeholder platform where government, civil society, industry and research come together to address the crucial need for global agricultural development strategies that ensure food security, poverty reduction and environmental sustainability.
