Protracted crises – how do we bridge funding imbalances and engage emerging actors?

An estimated 340 million people are in need of humanitarian support due to severe and complex armed conflicts that are turning into forgotten protracted crises, fueled by climate change and economic turmoil. Meanwhile, the gap between global needs and humanitarian funding continues to increase.

Countries such as Sudan, South Sudan, DR Congo, Yemen, Afghanistan, Somalia, Burkina Faso, to name a few, rank high on both IRC’s Emergency Watchlist and the EU’s Forgotten Crisis Assessment. Meanwhile, the international community is failing to close the ever-growing gap between global needs and resources for humanitarian assistance. This session will discuss how we can bridge funding imbalances to better support those in severe need while simultaneously working to strengthen self-sufficiency and community resilience. How can we engage and secure emerging donors and new sources of financing? How do we ensure a collective assistance that is impartial, accountable, and effective? What is needed from the international community, Sweden, civil society, and the private sector to support this shift?
