From Stockholm’s classrooms to Malawi’s fields

Ahead of their planned field trip to Malawi, we at SIANI, hosted a short preparatory session with a class of the Global College (“Globala Gymnasiet”) in Stockholm, to discuss topics around smallholder farming, #ZeroHunger, and rural poverty.

Young people have to be at the heart of our work towards achieving the sustainable development goals, SDGs. That’s why it’s important that young people gain a better understanding of the global challenges we are facing.

On Monday this week, the SIANI team visited the Global College, a Swedish upper secondary school for students with an interest in global issues. Before their upcoming graduation in early summer 2017, a group of students is going to visit Malawi in Southern Africa for three weeks. During their visit, the students are going to stay in rural areas and engage in interviews and discussions with smallholder farmers.

Visiting another country can be exciting and insightful, but also confusing, especially if that country is different to what one is used to, in terms of culture, food, weather, people, and landscapes. As a preparation for the trip, Anneli and Johannes from the SIANI team told the students a bit about their field experiences from Sub-Saharan Africa and provided a brief introduction to agriculture and its challenges in a smallholder context. In an interactive session, the students discussed multiple facets of urbanization and cash crop production, two issues that are very prevalent in Malawi.

When the students return from their trip, SIANI Youth will be interviewing them and sharing their stories here on the website.

You can find out more about the Global College and previous students trips to the field on their homepage.
