CA4SH: The road ahead for soil health action: Creating an enabling policy environment for soil health post-COP28

Soil has recently made its way into high-level policy mechanisms, such as the Australian National Soil Strategy and the European Union Soil Strategy for 2030, and is gaining ground through the United Kingdom Soil Health Inquiry. In multinational dialogue, soil health was also included in the decisions following the UNFCCC COP27 in 2022, through the Koronivia joint work on agriculture, and in the Emirates Declaration on Sustainable Agriculture, Resilient Food Systems and Climate Action at COP28. However, translating these decisions into enabling policy mechanisms is not a linear path.

To gain momentum on these important movements, and scale into other contexts, CA4SH is organising the first session of the 2024 Webinar Series around the topic of road mapping soil health into policy.

The objectives are threefold:

  1. Bring together soil policy advocates to share their experiences in integrating soil health into policy frameworks

  2. Lay out a basic road map for interested government representatives to understand the process

  3. Identify key steps that can be taken to start communicating with governments on the importance of integrating soil health into policies

  4. Connect audiences with key policy actors through a question-and-answer period

Through this event, key policy actors who have led the way in integrating soil health into policy mechanisms will create a roadmap for other stakeholders who wish to do the same in their contexts.

Details

This event targets a broad audience including stakeholders interested in advocating for soil health in their national policy frameworks. The 1.5 hr/session webinar series is open and free to attend to be inclusive to as many interested soil health advocates as possible.

Each session will comprise presentations from experts from various scales and sectors across the CA4SH membership, as well as a panel discussion and Q&A with speakers.

The panel will reflect upon the following points:

  1. Based on your personal experience, what have been the main challenges in bringing soil health to the table in policy?

  2. What are the current knowledge gaps that would help raise awareness of soil among policymakers?

  3. What are the critical mechanisms that are needed to enable soil health to be better integrated into policy?
