International mechanisms like REDD are meant to work as an incentive for countries to slow down and possibly stop the rates of deforestation of valuable forests land. REDD is implemented in many countries around the world but the effectiveness and fairness of the strategy is debated in the policy and research arena. Is this the most effective way to encourage sustainable forestry?

A new research project will study how participatory forest monitoring can be a viable option to achieve long-term forest conservation goals by including animal species in the scope of forest conservation schemes.

On the 28th of August, the research project Future Agriculture will be lunching the new report "A contribution to the discussion on: Critical research issues for future sub-Saharan African agriculture". The launch event, held at SLU in Ultuna (Uppsala), will present and discuss for different scenarios for Sub-Saharan Africa.

SLU Global released a new report titled "Innovative Doctoral Education for Global Food Security 2013-2014. A Swedish Government Initiative". The programme with focus on higher eductation for food security in low-income countries has been a major effort that brought many possibilities for SLU.

This report from Food Tank, CARE International and the CGIAR Research program on Climate Change, Agriculture, and Food Security (CCAFS) – Cultivating Equality: Delivering Just and Sustainable Food Systems in a Changing Climate – demonstrates how inequality determines who eats first and who eats worst, and how this shapes people’s ability to adapt to climate change.

There is a need for radical restructuring of food systems and the broader economy, emphasising changes in agricultural practices and re-evaluating governance and finance based on fair, healthy, and sustainable metrics.

Launched at a side event during COP22, Adaption of African Agriculture (AAA) is a new initiative aimed at reducing vulnerability of African agriculture to climate challenges.  Working both with individual projects and with international policy, the initiative specifically targets soil and water management in agriculture, climate risks management and financing of smallholde
