Transforming Food Systems: Ethics, Innovation and Responsibility

Transforming food systems is the theme of the 2022 conference of the European Society for Agricultural and Food Ethics (EURSAFE), organised jointly by the School of Social and Political Science and the Global Academy of Agriculture and Food Systems of the University of Edinburgh, and the independent ethical consultancy Edinethics Ltd.

Feeding the world’s growing population in ways that are effective, ethical and socially just, and protect the natural systems on which all life depends, is one of the greatest challenges facing humanity. The vulnerability of our interlinked human systems to external impacts has been brought home by the COVID-19 pandemic. Climate change poses deeper longer term threats. Despite advances in technology, communications and much else, over a third of the global population remains affected by malnutrition.

Reconfiguring the world’s economies for a net zero carbon future presents many challenges to agriculture, not least to reduce methane emissions from food animal production. Demands on natural systems and resources are at an all-time high, and call for greater efficiency of production. But at the same time, many are calling for a different ethical model of agriculture that reflects values of ecology, locality, biodiversity and human community.

  • How can we address global scale problems by local scale action?
  • What should be the role of the industry, the farmer and the citizen?
