The 2nd Eastern Africa Bioeconomy Conference will be held on 10/11 November 2021 in Nairobi, Kenya, as a Hybrid event with a few invited participants and a larger audience participating virtually, through FLOOR.

The objective of the 2nd Eastern Africa Bioeconomy Conference is twofold: to build momentum for implementing the Eastern Africa Bioeconomy Strategy, and to explore opportunities for inter-African cooperation and cross continental collaboration in bioeconomy development.

The conference is Africa’s largest convening on bioeconomy. Speakers and the audience will interact and discuss new frontiers of biobased research and innovation in Africa, especially in healthy and nutritious foods, safer and more efficacious medicines, clean energy, and water.

The discussions will draw on examples from existing bioenterprises, and other biobased innovations with promising business prospects, especially for the youth.

Additionally, speakers and the participants will discuss how the benefits of a sustainable bioeconomy can be achieved through regional collaboration. Examples will be drawn from bioeconomy initiatives of the East African Community (EAC), Economic Community of the West African States (ECOWAS) and the Southern African Development Cooperation (SADC). Key to this discussion will be opportunities for inter-Africa cooperation.

The 2nd Eastern Africa Bioeconomy Conference is organised by International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe)/ BioInnovate Africa, in partnership with the East African Science and Technology Commission (EASTECO), Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI)-Africa Centre, and Biosciences eastern and central Africa-International Livestock Research Institute (BecA-ILRI) Hub.
