Agriculture is one of the main emitters of greenhouse gases globally. However, as sources differ from country to country, calculating emissions on a national level can be tricky. At the same time knowing the sources and the amount of the exhaust of the green house gases is a crucial step for formulating sound climate mitigation and adaptation policies.

Anyone who has walked outside on a sunny day knows that forests and trees matter for temperature, humidity and wind speed. Planting trees speaks to concerns about climate change -- but the directly important aspects of the tree-climate relationships have so far been overlooked in climate policy where it relates to forest. That, at least, is the conclusion of a new review.

A workshop in Nairobi at the end of January 2017 brought together agricultural scientists from around sub-Saharan Africa, along with policy-makers, representatives of agri-businesses, grassroots organizations and policy studies networks.
