Objective
The primary objective of the Action Group is to comprehensively reduce AMR burden transmitted by food chains from poultry to human through active engagement with poultry farmers, veterinary practitioners, patients with urinary tract infections, patients with SSI infections and health care providers using digital communications strategies and physical meetings.
Stakeholders targeted encompass healthcare professionals, poultry farmers, veterinary professionals, agricultural policy makers, environmental scientists, livestock pharmacies, policy makers and traditional herbal practitioners the pharmaceutical developers and distributors of antibiotics.
Through the objectives above, the action group will collect AMR data for Uropathogens that cause urinary tract infections (UTI), and bacteria causing surgical site infections (SSI) in one province of each contributing country and scale up the use of test kits bacterial infections in poultry farming.
The Action Group seeks to address the awareness transmission patterns and primary sources of AMR spread in poultry environments and patients with UTI and SSI is highly needed globally. The team will test the infections in poultry, scale the herbs use in poultry farming, WASH and IPC, stewardship in poultry farming, as well as behaviour change among UTI and SSI patients and their health care providers.
Our geographic scope extends from West Africa-(Nigeria) to central Africa (the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Eastern Africa (Tanzania) and Asia (India) in order to address AMR gaps in the poultry markets and high level interaction of human and animal in the livestock and poultry industries.
Strategic positioning
The proposed Action Group has been strategically composed of multidisciplinary stakeholders in animal, human and environmental health. The team will work with research institute in west Africa (Hermon Development Foundation, Nigeria), Central Africa (Université Catholique du Graben de Butembo (UCG) from DRC), Eastern Africa (Vijiji Tanzania and the University of Dar es Salaam) and Asia (India Veterinary Association) to address all 5 elements of GAP and addition collaboration agenda.
- The group aligns the task of improving awareness and understanding of antimicrobial resistance of AMR among poultry farmers, veterinary medical practitioners, hospital personnel and the general community through effective communication, education and training in the 4 countries.
- Our initiative will collect updates of antibiotic resistance levels and transmission patterns that contribute to the global AMR data pool.
- The team will conduct advocacy for reducing Incidence of new infections: in poultry and human health by promoting availability of water, sanitation, and hygienic (WASH) practices and infection prevention control IPC) measures in poultry farming, human urinary and surgical site hygiene practices.
- The Action group will innovatively introduce native medicinal plants as new molecules for sustainable alternatives to antibiotics in poultry growth and treatment of UTI and SSI.
- The group will develop international experts to Strengthening Resources for measuring the Antibiotic resistance made available in all 4 countries. Additionally, the group will align with the international mechanisms promoting multi-sect oral cooperation, our emphasis on collaboration and knowledge transfer and sharing.
