Call for abstracts: Publication on mountain pastoralists and rangelands, resilience and sustainable pastoralism

Mountain Partnership Secretariat

The Mountain Partnership Secretariat has launched a call for case studies for a new publication to be released on International Mountain Day 2026.

The publication will focus on mountain pastoralists and rangelands, with an emphasis on resilience, livelihoods and sustainability. It will highlight how pastoralism and rangeland management support ecosystems, agrifood systems and mountain communities.

The call invites contributions that showcase practical solutions and best practices. Case studies could focus on a range of thematic areas, including:

– Climate change adaptation

– Ecosystem management, restoration and disaster risk reduction

– Water management and ecosystem-based approaches

– Land degradation and biodiversity conservation

– Integrated land management approaches

– Pastoral mobility, transhumance and migration

– Land tenure insecurity and communal rights

– Community-based governance and the integration of Indigenous Peoples’ and traditional knowledge into policy and planning

– Gender-responsive approaches and youth engagement

– Indigenous and locally adapted livestock breeds and sustainable grazing management

– Animal health and One Health approaches

– Bioeconomy, sustainable value chains and market access

– Transboundary cooperation, mobility corridors and cross-border governance

– Digital tools and technologies

The publication aligns with the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists 2026, as well as broader efforts on ecosystem restoration and climate adaptation.

We invite members, partners and practitioners to submit a case study abstract (maximum 300 words) to ciara.burke@fao.org by Friday, 1 May 2026. When submitting, please include affiliation.

Selected applicants will be notified by 14 May 2026 and requested to submit a full case study (up to 500 words) by 10 June 2026 with high-quality images.
