Every year the SIANI secretariat organises a meeting in Stockholm so our members and friends have a chance to interact with each other and provide input for the work plan for the year ahead. At the SIANI annual meeting 2020 we will focus on the effective inclusion of rural youth and explore different ways to increase their interest and participation in the food system as well as the connections between young people, food security and agriculture.

Why this topic?

The world is younger than ever – 42% of people are under the age of 25. Almost 1 billion youth live in low-income countries and nearly half of them in rural communities. In many ways, unlocking the potential of rural youth is key to sustainable development.

Investing in young people can yield boundless results in terms of poverty reduction, employment generation and food and nutrition security. After all, they are the farmers, workers and entrepreneurs of tomorrow. Their energy and dynamism are needed to transform food systems and rural areas. They can help feed the world and thus solve one of the biggest global challenges. These young people are key to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 and indeed, to our planet’s future.
