Innovation and intellectual property at the forefront of agricultural development

What is Intellectual Property and how does it work in practice?

Sustainable agriculture can help tackle poverty and drive economic growth, food security and climate action. But in order to work across these different areas and scales to improve agricultural sustainability in low and middle-income countries innovation is required.

Modern biotechnologies can speed-up agricultural innovation and support the development of the bioeconomy. However, there are challenges: transformations will only happen when these new technologies and their uses are available for all.

Intellectual property (IP) can support international policy development as well as standards on biodiversity and agriculture and connect them to national implementation, bringing global abstract frameworks to the level of researchers, farmers and other users.

This webinar, hosted by SIANI, will take the form of a chat-show, featuring guests from PRV, WIPO, and Sida as well as professionals who have participated in the ITP course in the past. The aim is to explain the role of IP, to demystify some of the common assumptions surrounding it, show why IP is needed through practical applications.

The webinar is organized in advance of the application deadline for the ITP Course ”Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources – in support of innovation”.  This course will focus on intellectual property as a tool to support innovation in low- and middle-income countries for the benefit of industry, research institutions and farmers.
