Launch of its 18th report on “Reducing inequalities for food security and nutrition” will take place on Thursday, 15 June 2023 at FAO headquarters in Rome (Green Room), at 14.00 CEST.

The world is characterized by inequalities in both opportunities and outcomes. Such inequalities are particularly stark within food systems, where they exacerbate already alarming conditions of hunger and malnutrition, presenting a serious impediment to any successful transformation. These inequalities affect people in every country in the world, and they systematically disadvantage certain groups of people. Often, multiple disadvantages are compounded.

This is why addressing inequality is at the heart of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which aim to reduce all forms of malnutrition, non-communicable diseases, hunger and food insecurity, while ensuring that no one is left behind.

The report will be presented at the 51st plenary session of the CFS in October 2023. The ensuing thematic workstream on inequalities will be part of the CFS’s overall vision and the objective of addressing the root causes of food insecurity and malnutrition.

The launch event will feature an opening speech by the CFS Chairperson, Gabriel Ferrero y de Loma-Osorio, followed by an introduction to the report by Bernard Lehmann, Chairperson of the High Level Panel of Experts on Food Security and Nutrition.

The content and main findings of the report will be presented by Bhavani Shankar, the HLPE-FSN drafting team leader. Finally, we are honoured to welcome Ismahane Elouafi, the Chief Scientist of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), who will deliver a thought-provoking address.
