The complexity of managing and communicating emerging health risks in food systems

Recommendations from a workshop held in December 2024 on risk communication and aligned policymaking in food systems in Sweden and the EU relevant to risk managers, assessors, communicators and policymakers within the food and sewage sludge management sectors.

Discussions on the topic were already sparked at the Uppsala Health Summit 2023 workshop. More than a dozen experts in food value chain from academia, civil society and the private and public sectors participated in the following 2024 workshop. Discussions centered around managing risks in the food system, including the use of treated sewage sludge as fertilizer in agriculture and factors to consider in trade-offs and conflicting goals in situations of crisis and uncertainty.

Among the recommendations are using structured and transparent approaches to balance conflicting goals, using understanding of facts, feelings and politics to effectively manage and communicate risks, while acknowledging trade-offs in risks and benefits.
