Maja is a part time communication officer at SIANI based at SLU. She is an Associate Professor (Docent) in Molecular Infection Biology and a researcher at the Department of Animal Biosciences. Her current research explores wastewater as a pathogen surveillance tool in Uganda and novel viral causes of hemorrhagic fever in humans in Uganda. She has research experience from East Africa, South America, and South-East Asia. Maja holds a PhD in Medicine. Her PhD thesis focused on drug resistance development towards antimalarial drugs. Maja’s research later shifted to virus discovery and characterization, often in an interdisciplinary and one health context. During the covid-19 pandemic, Maja was involved in establishing wastewater surveillance of SARS-CoV2 in Sweden. Maja desires to continue addressing the issue of pandemic preparedness and tools for surveillance, as well as virus evolution.
