Open call: Nordic research networks for 2027 activities

Nordic Forest Research (SNS) and the Forest Bioeconomy Network (ForBioeconomy)

Nordic Forest Research (SNS) and the Forest Bioeconomy Network (ForBioeconomy) are jointly announcing a call for research networks to support activities in 2027. This initiative aims to foster cooperation and enhance synergy within forest research across the Nordic region. We want to strengthen forest research across the Nordic region, bridge gaps between research and practical applications and promote cross-sector collaboration within a sustainable bioeconomy.

Focus areas of the call

1 Higher value creation from forest products and services
Higher value creation from forest products and services and new innovative value chains can contribute to vitalising the Nordic rural areas, securing recruitment and retention of a younger and more diverse workforce in the sector, as well as contributing to a fossil-free bioeconomy by substituting fossil-based products with sustainable wood-based materials.

2 Resilient forests and forest management
Resilient Nordic forests are essential because they can better withstand and recover from damages, extreme weather events, and crises, thereby sustaining important ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration, water purification, timber production, and biodiversity.

3 Climate change mitigation and adaptation
Mitigating the negative effects of climate change and adapting to changed environmental conditions is of great importance for the function of Nordic forests.

4 Safeguarding of forest biodiversity
Conservation and enhancement of forest biodiversity are essential for securing long-term resilience, acting as natural buffers against climate-related risks.

Maximum funding

Successful applicants may receive funds of maximum 200 000 SEK for activities over the course of one year (2026), covering at most 50% of the total budget for the network.

To be eligible for funding

Networks should include at least five countries and at least three research institutions from different countries within the Nordic region. Networks can also involve relevant external partners, but the main applicant must be a researcher or communication officer at a Nordic research institution.

At least 40% gender representation is required among both applicants and participants. SNS welcomes applicants and participants of other genders than the binary. PhD students and early career researchers (within ten years of starting their research career) should be included.

Find all prerequisites in the call text!

Expected outcomes of the networking

The outputs of funded networks should have tangible benefits for the Nordic community. This may include:
• Knowledge exchange through workshops, seminars, conferences (in-person, digital, or hybrid)
• Peer-reviewed scientific papers
• Policy recommendations based on research
• Large-scale research funding proposals
• Databases or websites
