Jummai Yila

Scientist- Gender Research at ICRISAT

Jummai O. Yila was a Programme Officer at the African Forest Forum (AFF), Nairobi Kenya, where she managed the implementation of the project on strengthening sustainable forest management in Africa (2014-2016).
She is currently a Scientist- Gender Research and coordinate the integration of gender in ICRISAT's for West and Central Africa.
Jummai has researched gender, livelihoods, climate change adaptation, food and nutrition security and natural resource management in many countries of Africa and Southeast Asia. Jummai enjoys engaging in discussions on the socio-cultural and gender dynamics of resource use and management for effective policy formulation. Jummai is a Fellow of the African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD), 2014-2015 cohort and a member of the SIANI expert group on energy, food and nutrition security access, multidisciplinary research projects with team members from three CG Centers (CIFOR, ICRAF ICRISAT) and SEI.
Jummai has been employed by a diverse range of organizations, including national governments, community-based NGOs, and an international research institute. Jummai’s research interest includes transverse the agri-food systems, equitable resource utilization and management and women empowerment; examining institutional and socio-cultural aspects of vulnerability, food and nutrition security and the links to cross cutting theme of gender and development. She received her master’s and doctoral degrees in Gender and Development Studies from the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand and a bachelor’s degree in Microbiology from Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Nigeria.
