Welcome to a webinar about PEM, and the launch of a new interactive tool for responsible mining governance

This is an opportunity to learn more about Participatory Environmental Monitoring (PEM) and how the new checklist can add to the mining governance process. The webinar also includes insights and experiences from countries working with PEM.

PEM is an approach for engaging local communities, local governments and mining companies jointly in the process of tracking and assessing the health of their environment. PEM activities aim to build community knowledge and serves to raise trust between the stakeholders.

The interactive PEM Checklist along with diverse experiences compiled in a PEM Guide are available in English, Spanish and French. They draw on experiences from ten years of implementation in the Environmental Governance Programme (EGP).

What’s on the agenda?

The webinar will cover

  • What is PEM?
  • How does PEM support responsible mining governance?
  • How can PEM approaches inform decision-making at different stages of implementation?
  • What are the practical lessons from working with PEM?
  • How to get started with the PEM checklist?
  • Questions & Answers
When and where?

This is a digital Zoom meeting that will take place on Tuesday October 28 at 2 pm GMT +02:00. You will receive the Zoom link to the meeting after registration. The webinar will be in English.

Who is organizing the webinar?

The webinar is organized by The Environmental Governance Programme (EGP). This is a joint initiative of the Swedish Environmental Agency (SwEPA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) focusing on responsible mining. The objective is to minimize negative environmental and social impacts from mining.

  • EGP organizes its activities in thematic areas that cut across the mining cycle:
  • Environmental and social impacts assessments
  • Deforestation, biodiversity and ecosystem services
  • Gender and mining
  • Participatory Environmental Monitoring (PEM)
  • Mine closure, waste management and re-mining
