Madeleine Fogde
Programme Director

Madeleine has a broad background within the educational field. She has worked extensively with programme development, information dissemination, capacity development and adult learning in Southern Africa since 1993. Her experiences with capacity development ranges from illiterate women in remote rural areas to politicians at central positions. She has contributed to the development of a bilateral rural water supply and eco-sanitation programme for Austria in Mozambique. Experiences generated in the field have transformed into national strategies vital for Mozambique's achievement of the MDG's. From 2007 to 2011, Madeleine managed the extensive Sida financed Ecological Sanitation Research programme at the SEI.

Matthew Fielding
Deputy Director & Communications Manager

Matthew has worked as a field researcher for 6 years in the Amazon region of South America and in Western Africa. He recently returned to Stockholm after 2.5yrs based in Bangkok.  He is responsible for all the communications obligations of SIANI and oversees bith web and social media.  His research focus has been on interactions between agricultural practice, soil health and livelihoods. He has wide interests linked to these areas in emerging technologies such as biochar and remote sensing and especially their potential in rural capacity development. Matthew has an MSc in Development Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London and a BSc in Tropical Environmental Science from the University of Aberdeen. He is a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.

Ekaterina Bessonova
Communications Officer

Ekaterina holds Master Degree in Sustainable Development from Uppsala University.  Her final project was devoted to design of public-private partnership for waste management in Haiti. She also has a degree in Political Science, during which she majored in Political Communication and System Analysis. Ekaterina’s primary interests are focused around strategies for sustainable futures including organizational change, sustainable business and communication for development.

Anneli Sundin
Communications Officer

Anneli has a background in environmental science and sustainability, and has a broad understanding of concepts linked to resilience. She graduated from Stockholm University in 2013, where she studied the M.Sc. programme Social-Ecological Resilience for Sustainable Development at the Stockholm Resilience Centre. In her under- and postgraduate dissertations, she has been studying climate impacts on vulnerable smallholder farmers in Eastern (Kenya) and Western (Burkina Faso and Niger) parts of Africa. Anneli has a passion for sustainable development, food and agro-ecology, but also in how to effectively communicate research in fun, creative ways that results in long-lasting impacts.

Karolin Andersson
Communications Assistant

Karolin is a food agronomist with a BSc Degree in Food Science from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and an MSc Degree in Agricultural Development from the University of Copenhagen. She has conducted field work in India, Kenya and Tanzania, and her thesis project consisted of a gender sensitive analysis of the cassava leaves value chain in coastal Tanzania. Karolin is particularly interested in questions around increased food and nutrition security in low income countries, gender relations in the agriculture sector and agricultural value chain development for improved livelihoods of smallholder farmers.
