More than half of the world’s seven billion people live in urban areas – a proportion that is set to increase to 69% by 2050. Rapid urbanization will increase the demand for food security, nutritious diets and food safety for urban populations.

This policy brief outlines policy actions for management of urban livestock production and identifies the existing knowledge gaps.

It is official: we are predominantly an urban species. More than 50% of the world’s population now lives in urban areas, this fact appeals to have a fresh look at urban agriculture.

Population growth poses many risks, but it also creates a lot of opportunities, and urban agriculture is one of them. Growing urban population with increasing incomes creates demand for a more diversified diet with a substantial fraction of animal products.

The anthology on Urban and Peri-urban Agriculture for Food Security in Low-income Countries was launched on June 18.

The world is becoming a more urbanized place, currently about 50% of the worlds´ population lives in cities and the proportion is expected to increase to almost 70% in 2050. The increase is likely to be particularly prominent in Africa and Asia, where urban population is expected to double between 2000 and 2030.
