Meet the Theme at the Global Landscape Forum in Paris

Take the time to get to know the themetic cooperation between SIANI & Focali around forests, landscapes and food security at the Global Landscape Forum (GLF) in Paris on December 5-6.

Focali project coordinator Maria Ölund will attend the event with a group of Focali researchers representing a number of different universities in Sweden. If you attend GLF you have the possibility to meet the researchers in the information booth that is shared jointly with the network’s partners SIANI and SLU-Global. The booth is located in the Food Security Pavilion on Sunday.

Videos with Focali members:

To find out what some of Focali’s researchers are up to you can watch the network’s newly produced films in the series of videos with voices from the Focali research network. The videos have been prepared ahead of GLF and will be shared through Twitter during the event. In the videos different members shortly share the key challenges and initiatives that they currently work with, and provide their perspectives on how to find effective strategies to address these challenges. If you use twitter follow the network’s activities during the Global Landscape Forum at @Focali_se

Launch of Focali brief on deforestation drivers:

On Sunday Focali will launch a brand new Focali brief about the role of agricultural commodity consumption and trade as key deforestation drivers. The brief shows that only four commodities in just seven tropical countries was during the period 2000-2011 responsible for 40% of global tropical deforestation and associated carbon emissions. The brief is based on the key findings from a study soon published in Environmental Research Letters. Come by the booth in the Food Security pavilion and grab a copy or listen to one of the authors Martin Persson talk about the study in this video.

Other Focali related events at GLF:

On Saturday SIWI will co-host the event “Making a splash for SDGs and climate goals”. The workshop is partly based on findings by the SIWI’s (Stockholm International Water Institute) cluster group on water and forest that Focali are part of. In this film Eskil Mattson shares more information about the cluster group, its publications and the session at GLF.

On Sunday in the Food Security Pavilion, SIANI and Fairtrade International organize the seminar: “How to ensure responsible practices along agricultural supply chains? – A multi-stakeholder dialogue” at 15.45pm. The event is moderated by Focali member Torsten Krause from Lund University and Mia Crawford from the Swedish Ministry of Enterprise and Innovation and the chief negotiator from Sweden at COP21 on global forest policy and climate change is one of the panelists.

Another GLF event related to forests and water is the launch of the policy brief “Managing forests for water and for climate cooling” that will take place in the Thematic Pavillion E, Booth 29, 9-10am on Sunday. The brief is partly based on research conducted by Focali members Aida Bargués Tobella, Ulrik Ilstedt and Anders Malmer at Department of Forest Ecology and Management, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.
